People often ask, "How do I know if I am ready to get married?" There is no single answer. But there are some useful areas to think about honestly.
Readiness is about more than age
Being old enough, or having family who want you to marry, does not on its own mean you are ready. Readiness is about whether you are prepared for the responsibilities and the daily reality of married life.
Areas worth reflecting on
Your faith
Marriage is an act of worship and a serious commitment. Think about how you want faith to guide your marriage and your home.
Your character
Marriage asks for patience, kindness, honesty and the ability to say sorry. Think about how you handle stress, anger and disappointment today.
Your responsibilities
Are you ready to share your time, plans and decisions with another person? Are you able to meet the responsibilities that come with marriage?
Your finances
You do not need to be wealthy. But it helps to understand your income, spending and any debts, and to be honest about them.
Your expectations
Many difficulties in marriage come from expectations that were never discussed. Think about what you expect from a spouse, and what a spouse might expect from you.
Your support
Who can you turn to for good advice? Family, friends, a scholar or a counsellor can all help at different times.
Being ready does not mean being perfect
Nobody is fully prepared for everything. Readiness means being willing to learn, to grow, and to work at the marriage together.
