Questions to talk about before nikah

A practical guide to the conversations worth having before marriage, from faith and family to money, home and children.

Not yet published2 min read

Choosing a spouse is one of the most important decisions you will make. Good conversations before the nikah help two people understand each other, spot real differences early, and start married life with clearer expectations.

The Quran describes marriage as a source of tranquillity, affection and mercy:

"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy." (Quran 30:21)

Talking honestly before marriage is one way to work towards that.

Before you begin

These conversations work best when they are calm, respectful and honest. You do not need to agree on everything. The aim is to understand each other, and to know where you differ.

Where it is wanted and appropriate, a parent, guardian or trusted family member can help these conversations go well.

Faith and practice

  • What role does faith play in your daily life?
  • How do you hope to grow in your faith after marriage?
  • How would you like faith to shape your home and family?

The Prophet ﷺ advised that, among the reasons people marry, religion should come first (Sahih al-Bukhari 5090). Talking about faith early helps you understand what that means for each of you.

Family

  • How involved do you expect your families to be in your married life?
  • How will you handle different expectations from each family?
  • Where do you see yourselves living, and near whom?

Home and daily life

  • How do you see responsibilities being shared at home?
  • What does a normal week look like for you?
  • How do you like to spend free time and rest?

Work, study and money

  • What are your plans for work or study?
  • How do you manage money today? Do you have savings or debts?
  • How will household costs be planned and paid for?

Children

  • Would you like children, and when?
  • What values are most important to you in raising a family?

Handling disagreements

  • How do you usually react when you are upset?
  • How would you like disagreements to be handled?
  • Who would you turn to for advice if you needed help?

Health and wellbeing

  • Is there anything about your health or wellbeing that a future spouse should know?

Some subjects are personal. Share what is appropriate at the right stage, and treat what the other person shares with care and confidentiality.

A final thought

No list of questions can guarantee a happy marriage. But honest conversations, good intentions and seeking guidance from Allah through istikharah can help you make your decision with clarity and peace of mind.
